Taking its title from the classic Sam & Dave recording from 1967, Soul Man is a fictional tribute to the glory days of Soul music. Using a mix of factual happenings and interwoven with fictional names and places the story charts the rise and fall of key players in Soul City, USA. A City who’s streets and districts reflect soul music in their names, for example. the sea of love, the dock of the bay, the highways of my life, back street and the valley of the lonely. For those familiar with Soul music, within the novel’s text are constant references to those song titles that we remember, for those not familiar there is a story of power, deceit, love in its many shapes, betrayal, tragedy and linking the characters is the spirit of the City, Soul Man.
